Are you looking for the most up-to-date list of Amazon restricted brands that can't be resold on Amazon?

You're in luck my friend!

The Selling Family has been keeping a list of restricted brands on Amazon since 2016. We keep this list updated often so you can always trust this list to be complete and accurate.

This list was last updated in October of 2023.

Below, you will find our list of brands that (most) Amazon sellers are unable to sell. Or, that we don't recommend you try selling on Amazon, even if you show approved to sell it.

The reason some may show up on here even if it isn't technically restricted is it may be a brand that is exclusively sold by the brand owner, or a brand that has been known to file IP complaints against sellers.

Let's look at these reasons a bit more in detail below.

What Makes A Brand Restricted On Amazon?

There are a few reasons a brand may be added to our restricted brand list even if they aren't technically restricted from third-party sellers completely.

It's important to be aware of this, because sometimes you show you can sell something, and then Amazon flags the listing for one of the reasons below.

Here are the 3 main reasons we would consider a brand restricted and include it on our list:

1. The brand is restricted from all Amazon 3rd party sellers. There are brands that are completely restricted from any seller listing them on Amazon, besides the brand owner or Amazon directly. If you were to try and list these brands on Amazon, you would see a note that you can not sell the product and would not be given the opportunity to request approval for the product at all.

2. The brand is restricted from unapproved sellers. This means the brand shows being restricted, but you are given the opportunity to request approval to sell the brand. Sometimes you have to provide invoices from an approved wholesaler, and sometimes you can be automatically approved to sell the brand based on your seller performance history.

3. The brand files IP Complaints against the sellers. Sometimes a brand can technically be listed on your Amazon account, meaning it isn't ‘restricted', but we don't recommend listing the brand because they will file IP complaints about you.

Brands that file IP complaints are the worst offenders on this list! Getting IP complaints on your seller account can wreck havock for you as a seller, so it's important to stay away from IP Complaint happy brands at all costs!

For this reason, I highly recommend using an extension like IP Alert to keep you on top of these brands before you buy the item from the store or list the item through your seller account.

How To Check For Brand Restriction While Sourcing Online & In Store

Anytime you are sourcing products for your Amazon business, it's important to make sure you are able to sell the item BEFORE making a purchase.

When you are in store, you can use the Amazon Seller App to check brand / category restrictions and even request approval on the go.

When you are doing online sourcing, I recommend the chrome extension – RevSeller. Not only does this extension give you an excellent ROI calculator right on the Amazon detail page, it will gives you a spot where you can quickly see if you are approved to sell a product or not.

As you can see in the image above, the Req Appr is in RED. That shows that this item is restricted and can not be sold from my seller account.

If you want to try out RevSeller, you can get 30 days free and get a discount when you use the code: THESELLINGFAM during checkout.

What If You Want To Sell A Restricted Brand On Amazon?

Now that you have a complete list of brands that are restricted from selling on Amazon as a 3rd party seller, what should you do if you still want to sell one of these brands?

Some of the restricted brands above allow third party sellers to be APPROVED and then sell the brands.

To get approval, you have a couple of options for getting approved.

Here are 3 ways you can go about getting brand approval for restricted brands on Amazon:

1. You can get approval from the brand directly to sell their product. In this case, they provide you with a letter stating you can sell their brand. This works best for sellers who use the wholesale business model.

2. You can purchase 10 of the branded products from an approved wholesaler and use your invoice in your approval application. If approved, Amazon will ungate you and allow you to sell the brand.

3. You can request approval to sell the brand and your account is automatically approved and ungated so you can sell the brand on Amazon. All of the brands in our list above, do not typically qualify for automatic ungating. But, I recommend requesting approval for each restricted brand you come across to see if you are automatically ungated or not.

Why Does Amazon Restrict Brands From Third-Party Sellers?

Over the years, we have seen many brands go from unrestricted to restricted, overnight. When Amazon does this, it causes panic across the selling community. Especially for sellers who are ALREADY selling the newly restricted brands!

I like to think that Amazon must have a good reason to restrict brands from all sellers being able to sell them.

Some of the reasons I believe Amazon restricts brands are:

1. The items are being counterfeited and listed as the name brand.

2. The items have a high theft rate.

3. The brand doesn't want the perceived value to be decreased with a bunch of sellers on the listing.

4. The brand wants to be the exclusive seller on Amazon and is part of the Amazon Brand Registry program.

5. The product comes with a warranty that can only be claimed if purchased from an approved seller.

As I said, I like to believe that Amazon has the very best intentions when it comes to restricting brands from 3rd party sellers.

When a product is being sold in a way it shouldn't be, buyers start to be weary of buying things on Amazon, and that's no good for sellers!

What do you think?

I hope you found this complete list of restricted brands helpful!
